Turkey

What do the images we encounter today reveal about the past or even the future? Can a meticulous examination of an image uncover previously overlooked connections? In Sync, brings together works by Ali Mahmut Demirel, Deniz Tortum & Sister Sylvester, Doğa Ünyaylar, İmelda Kuyumcu, Kerem Ozan Bayraktar, Merve Mepa, and Toprak Fırat & Yasin Arıbuğa. The exhibition examines experiences of synchronicity—a framework of temporal co-existence that redefines our understanding of the world as encompassing not only causal relationships between things and events, but also meaningful coincidences arising from the interplay between our inner psychological landscapes and external phenomena.

As part of Noise_MediaArt’s second edition, OI_Focus spotlights artists from Turkey, aiming to celebrate the distinct voice of media-based art from the region. Focusing on the manifold ways in which space and time converge in relation to technology, the exhibition gathers works spanning from 2005 to the present, each displaying new media’s ability to yield profound insights into the complex structure of time. Combining sculpture, video, AI, and computer mapping, the works on view subvert the idea of temporal unity: they reclaim moments too often dismissed as coincidences and offer a more holistic view of time by challenging our subjective perception of it. Ranging from a video featuring 3D models of the natural world as a way to preserve ecosystems threatened by ecological collapse, to a three-channel installation capturing Istanbul's traffic flow disrupted by AI, to a tomography fossil reconstruction, this selection of artworks portrays the multifaceted, unfathomable nature of the present moment. In the world envisioned by these nine artists, technology becomes a tool for forging new patterns of interacting with our environment and people, reminding us of the cumulative knowledge that makes up what we come to understand as now.

Taking place at Palais Festetics in Vienna, a Neo-Renaissance architectural marvel, In Sync invites the audience to observe the synchronicities shaping our existence. The constellation of works eschews harmony, instead offering a way for us to coexist in a world where we have become accustomed to focusing on the present as if it were the only reality.
